Profitable, Precautionary Science*?

Scenario:

You go to your doctor with a serious health complaint. S/He (a heavy investor in pharmaceutical companies?) has you receive, right then and there, a new, experimental medication and says: “You will not be counted as taking this medication until two weeks after your second dose. You will be required to mask and isolate as much as possible until two-weeks after that second dose. And if your symptoms worsen, it will, undoubtedly, be attributable to the disease or to any co-morbidities, known or unknown, that you may have. And as a precautionary measure, all your family, friends, and neighbors should also take this prescription regime, even if not displaying any symptoms since contagion is so rampant these days. And just remember, if you are admitted to hospital, you will be officially admitted as un-medicated until two weeks after your second dose. Is that understood?”

You sort of nod.

“And by the way,” s/he adds, “boosters may be required in the future, with the same two-week, efficacious period. That's the beauty of science, you know; forever learning and adapting — like Neil deGasseGrasse says.”

You walk away shaking your head in wonder.

Then you read this two-week rule** on the CDC website and realize it must be integral to the new-normal in modern, medical science. And you realize, how essential it must be to avoid false attribution to medication for harms or strange symptoms occurring within two weeks of the last dose. It's a genius precaution! you must admit.

Then you ask yourself: “What is this weirdness, I'm beginning to feel? What is this weirdness??!!”

You phone the clinic with trembling fingers. A voice recording comes on. “If you are experiencing any symptoms of any kind, be assured, it's not the prescribed medication. Go to emergency, if need be, and for best service, we suggest you not mention the medication if your two weeks has not elapsed. If you mention it, it will just confuse the issue and the numbers. Good bye.”
